Patek Philippe’s new Ref.5073 minute repeater watch is one of the few watches with church bell alarm and perpetual calendar functions. What’s even more commendable is that the 103 baguette diamonds on the bezel and 55 diamonds set on the dial and buckle show the luxury of this watch.
As the ‘church bell’ is almost twice as long as an ordinary reed, the acoustic principle of this ultra-long reed is self-explanatory: the longer the reed, the more melodious the time signal can be. However, since the ‘spring bells of the church bell’ can neither touch each other, nor can the suspended parts touch the movement or the case, the only part that can be contacted is the miniature short-range hammer. Therefore, manufacturing is extremely difficult.
For this watch, Patek Philippe chose the time-keeping device that attracted much attention when it introduced the astronomical tourbillon watch in 2001, allowing the Ref.5073 watch to report the hours and quarter clocks in three tones: bass, treble and high-low mixed beep. And minutes. The roundness of the timekeeping sound must be personally inspected by Patek Philippe’s owner, the president, who is the guardian of Patek Philippe’s historical tradition: every finished watch must pass their strict inspection before it leaves the factory.
The perpetual calendar function is presented through three auxiliary dials at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. No calendar adjustment required until 2100. The highly accurate moon phase display is located in the date dial at 6 o’clock. Like other Patek Philippe watches, the moon phase differs from the actual lunar cycle by one day every 122 years and 45 days.
The watch uses a 42 mm diameter case, made of PT950 platinum, and is processed by traditional cold stamping. The watch’s bezel and lugs are set with a total of 103 top Wesselton baguette diamonds, weighing approximately 4.33 carats. The black lacquered gold dial is set with 13 baguette diamonds (approximately 0.25 carats) as hour markers. Another 42 baguette diamonds (approximately 0.69 carats) are set on the surface of the platinum buckle. According to the practice of Patek Philippe, the case is set with a low-profile and restrained 0.02 carat diamond between the lugs at 6 o’clock to show that it is a platinum case.
This watch has a solid platinum caseback and a replaceable sapphire crystal caseback, through which you can admire the precise movement. The first thing that catches the eye is the carved 22K gold automatic plate, the hollow Calatrava cross star pattern under the gold-plated dome cover, and the small centrifugal regulator, which controls the normal rhythm of the timekeeping device.
